Cross Country Team Competes at Gunnison Invitational

The Rye High School Cross Country team competed in Gunnison at the Mountaineer Invitational last week. Salida won both the girls and boys’ competition with identical team scores of 38 points. In the boys’ competition Rye placed 7th of eight teams with a score of 171.

Hurne Rushes for Over 400 Yards

Those of you who made the trip to Center last Friday night for the Rye High School football game witnessed history. Since at least 2005 (the length of time single game records are available) Dylan Hurne’s 403 yards rushing is the greatest single game yardage in Thunderbolt history.

Volleyball Team Increases Sets Won in a Row to Fifteen Last Week

The Rye High School girls’ volleyball team climbed to the #2 ranking in Colorado 2A volleyball with another perfect week, winning six straight sets against two opponents. Rye is now the second name listed on the 2A state rankings, with only Wiggins ranked higher. Both teams are currently 9-1.

Golfers Tee Off in Alamosa for Regionals

The final two golf tournaments before the regional tournament, which took place on Tuesday and will be reported in the View next week, happened early last week. On September 12 the league tournament took place at Hollydot. Swink came away with the championship shooting 249 as a team.

Volleyball Team Wins Nine Straight Games Last Week

The Rye High School girls volleyball team won nine straight sets last week over three opponents and upping their season record to 7-1 and leading the Santa Fe League with a 4-0 record. On September 5, the team traveled to Walsenburg to face John Mall and downed the home team 25-11, 25-15, and 25-4.

Cross Country Team Continues to Better Times

Nearly 400 runners participated at the September 9 Joe I. Vigil Cross Country Invitational in Alamosa. David Maroney finished highest for the Thunderbolts as he placed 23rd out of the 204 young men who finished the 5000-meter race. Maroney ran the course in a time of 17:45.82.

“We didn’t come out well enough at the start of the game,” Rye High School football Head Coach Connor Pigg summarized the 39-22 loss to Salida last Friday night on the road. “Compounding our slow start,” continued Pigg, “was a bad injury to Codah Graber.

Nearly One Hundred Golfers Battle it out at Hollydot

Ninety-five golfers descended on Hollydot Golf Course on September 1 for the Rye High School Invitational Golf Tournament. Monte Vista walked away with the team title while the local talent from Rye came in 8th out of the 21 teams in attendance.

RHS Volleyball Team Downs Swallows in Three Sets

The Rye High School volleyball team moved into the #4 slot in the 2A state rankings this week as they rolled over Swallows Charter Academy 25-17; 25-16; and 25-14 in straight sets on the road. Senior Jaklyn Newitt had three service aces and 16 assists in the victory.

Maroney Captures Third in Rocky Ford Invitational

David Maroney finished in third place in the 50th Annual Rocky Ford Invitational Cross Country Meet on September 1. Maroney captured the bronze, the first medal of the season, with a season best time of 17:12.10 in the 5000-meter event. Cole Krug of Lamar won the event in a time of 16:45.
