RCC Saddle Club Ready to Kick Off Season

Dust off those saddles and curry up the horses; Rye Colorado City (RCC) Saddle Club is getting ready to start its season. In order to get ready for the 2024 season, two workdays, Thursday, April 25th, and Saturday, May 4th, are scheduled to get the arena and equipment in working order for the season.

Apply for Stockmen’s Association Dickerson Scholarship

Pueblo County Stockmen’s Association (PCSA) is proud to once again offer youth the opportunity to apply for the Dickerson Memorial Scholarship. The Dickerson Scholarship is presented in remembrance of C. L. “Dick” and Evelyn Dickerson who were longtime Pueblo area cattle producers and youth supporters. The purpose of this scholarship is to aid the recipient in the pursuit of their personal growth and development through education.

Evraz Steel Mill and Vision Hills Fires Contained

At Evraz Mountain Steel Mill a fire erupted last Friday and produced large quantities of black smoke, health advisories and multiple burned buildings. On Saturday, Mayor Heather Graham posted a video saying the fire was under control.

Thunderbolt WinterGuard Places 5th at State Contest

Saturday, April 6, was a huge day for the Thunderbolt WinterGuard as they made the long trek to Denver to compete in the State Championships. On a long and nerve-wracking day, the team left the Greenhorn Valley early in the morning, and placing announcements wasn’t completed until almost 10:00 p.m.

Head Coach Kermit Spencer, who guided the Rye High School girls basketball team in 2021-22 to a third-place finish in the State Tournament, isn’t sure what his overall record as coach at RHS was. He clearly remembers one year when his charges only went 2-18. But in his last four years at RHS, that record was 86-7.

April Wind Storm Howled Across the Area

Spring is typically windy in Colorado and March is often legendary for its windstorms, but April provided some noteworthy gusts this past weekend as the area was bombarded with high wind. The National Weather Service recorded more than 40 wind gusts of 75 mph or more during the April 6 -7 storm.
