The Rye High School volleyball team moved into the #4 slot in the 2A state rankings this week as they rolled over Swallows Charter Academy 25-17; 25-16; and 25-14 in straight sets on the road.
Senior Jaklyn Newitt had three service aces and 16 assists in the victory. Desiree Ruiz had 24 digs and 17 service receptions.
Kelsy Stribling logged eight kills and Leah Peterson added seven more. Both Isabella Bond and Hayley Newitt had a pair of blocks and Jordan Holgerson had 18 digs.
“I ask the girls from time to time what they believe they need improvement on and we work through that list,” shared Head Coach Michele Roy. “ This week we are working on those skills and situations. Swallows has a young scrappy team that reminded me of us last year. Even though we beat Swallows in three they surprised us a bit. I think that was a good reminder for our team, especially going into this week, to not assume a match is going to be easy. The girls want to be 7-1 by the end of the week and they know they have to keep their intensity high to achieve this.”
Tuesday, Rye traveled to Walsenburg for a match against John Mall (3-4). Tonight (Thursday) they travel to Pueblo, to face Pueblo Central (1-4) and on Saturday go to Las Animas (2-5) for a match.
Rye is 4-1 on the season which includes a 2-0 record in the Santa Fe League. Their lone loss is to 3A #2 ranked Lamar in the opening contest of the season.
