Christmas in July for Greenhorn Valley Book Club

The Greenhorn Valley Book Club met on Thursday, July 25, to discuss The Wishing Bridge by Viola Shipman. This simply written book celebrates the ideas and traditions of Christmas amid plot substories and twists.

Alice Mae Gleason Finlay Alice married Grover Cleveland Finlay in 1912. Grover was born at Abbey on his parent’s homestead. He was the tenth of twelve children of William Gibson and Katherine Jean Kerney Finlay. Grover and Alice lived at or near his father’s homestead while he raised stock.

The Youngest Children of Daniel and Mary Beavers WalterSylvester ‘Ves’ Walter Ves was the youngest son, and last Walter child have been born in Kansas. Once his parents had passed, Ves settled in Garfield County, Colorado near Glenwood Springs. He married Clara Belle Crawford there in 1889.

The Children of John Charles and Viola Cross WalterVera Ann Walter Gleason Vera grew up in Rye. In the 1912 Pueblo Directory, 21-yearold Vera is listed as a domestic.Three years later she married a neighbor from Rye, Bernard Gleason.

The Walter Family Part III of V

Cornelius William ‘Doc’ Walter Doc was the oldest son of Daniel and Mary Walter. He was born in Ohio, lived briefly in Kansas and arrived in the Greenhorn Valley old enough to help his father on the land.

The Walter Family Part II of V

The Children of Mary Agnes Walter Samworth Howard Jones Joseph and Mary Agnes’s oldest child, Jonas Daniel Samworth moved to Idaho and raised seven children before dying of a heart attack in 1913.
