Wrestlers Compete in League Tournament Thursday Night

Rye High School took half a dozen wrestlers to the Gunnison Cowboy Invitational last Saturday and came back with an eighthplace finish in the 16-team event.

Remington Peterson continued his season unbeaten with a gold medal in the 195 lb. weight class and a 13-0 record for the season. Peterson scored a fall 1:51 into the second period, at the end of the second period and against Gordon of Mead in the finals won a technical fall outpointing Gordon 24-8.

Devin Samuelson won a silver medal in the 220 lb. weight division. Samuelson pinned his first four opponents. He scored a fall with two seconds left in the first period. 38 seconds into the second period, with 44 seconds left in his third match and a fourth fall against Tatham of Mead to earn a shot at the gold.

In the first-place match Samuelson lost by a fall to Lovelace of Sargent. Samuelson has a 12-5 record for the season.

Andy Prichard placed 4th in the 106 lb. weight class. Prichard lost his first match by a fall, won his second match by a fall, won his third match by a fall, pinned Wojciah of Summit in his fourth match 1:37 into the second period. In the match for 3rd Prichard lost by a fall, to finish 4th in the tournament.

Gage Schaap moved his record to 11-7 and placed 5th. Schaap won his first match in 27 seconds by a fall. He then lost a major decision and a fall. He followed that with a 5-3 victory. In the fifth-place match he pinned Collins of Summit with one minute left in the match.

Jose Martinez at 170 lbs. placed 6th. He lost his first match by a decision and then won his second match by a decision 6-0. He then lost by a pin and followed that by a win by a pin against Santi of Mead with 45 seconds left in the match. He lost his final match by a fall.

Cody Dodge at 132 lbs. lost five matches by falls in the tournament.

Canon City won the event with 256.5 points. Rye scored 91.5 points to gain the number eight spot.

“I think the kids did an excellent job this weekend, “shared Head Coach Billy Forell. “We saw huge improvement across the board from our lightest guy to our heaviest. We have the league tournament Thursday which will be held at John Mall (Walsenburg) followed by the Florence Tournament Friday and Saturday.
