Track Team Grabs Bronze Medal and Four Other Top Six Finishes

The Rye High School track team competed in the Larry Pickering Invitational 2024 at Dutch Clark Stadium in Pueblo on Saturday, March 23. The meet was hosted by Pueblo Centennial High School.

The top finisher in the meet for the Thunderbolts was Isaiah Guzman in the boys triple jump, where he finished 3rd and captured the bronze medal. Guzman jumped 42’6” in the event which had 31 teams participating. Guzman also placed 5th in the long jump with a jump of 20’ 6.5”.

The highest finisher for the girls team was Jaklyn Newitt in the shot put where she placed 4th with a toss of 31’4”. Newitt also placed 10th in the discus with a throw of 87’6”.

Hailey George placed 5th in the 300-meter hurdles for the Lady Thunderbolts, completing the event in a time of 53.19 seconds. George also placed 9th in the 100-meter hurdles with a wind aided time of 18.61 seconds, 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 30’, and 11th in the long jump with a jump of 14’ 7.25”.

Kendall Himmelberg placed 6th in the triple jump for the girls with a leap of 30’11”. She also jumped 14’ 2.5” in the long jump which was good for a 16th place finish.

Taye Hutcheson placed 9th in the triple jump with a leap of 30’4”. She also had a 14’3.75” jump in the long jump which was good for 15th place.

The girls 4x200 meter relay team placed 10th with a time of 2:11.37. Running the four legs for the team were Aisha Farney, Kayla Himmelberg, Adriel Snyder, and Ozzira Garrison.

The boys 4x400 meter relay team placed 11th. Mason Ford, Joshua George, Derick Bak, and Isaiah Guzman carried the baton for the Thunderbolts. They were timed at 3:57.70. The boys’ 4x200 relay team placed 13th with a time of 1:49.33. Mason Ford, Xavier Brown, Nathan Santini, and Enoch Farney ran the four legs.

Emmyle Varner placed 15th in the shot put with a throw of 27’ 3.5” and 16th in the discus with a throw of 79’ 8.5”. Derick Bak was 15th in the boys shot put with a toss of 36’ 7.5”.

Sixteenth place went to the girls 800-meter sprint medley relay team. Ming Tam, Ozzira Garrison, Taya Hutcheson and Aleesyah Fraizer made up the team. The had a time of 2:16.43.

Justin Siudyla was 17th in the 3200-meter run. Siudyla completed the event in a time of 13:31.80. Mathius Lorenz also was 17th in the shot put with a toss of 35’ 8.5”. Josh George was 18th in the triple jump with a 35’9” effort. Derek Sheets was 19th in the 800-meter run, an event he completed in a time of 2:23.76.

“We had a successful meet on Saturday with personal records and five top six placings,” shared Girls Head Coach Catherine Gallegos. “We need to focus on improving our handoffs in the relays and continue working on techniques to obtain personal records.”

Gallegos continued, “We will not be entering a meet this weekend due to Spring Break. We have back-to-back meets coming up next, the Steel City Fast Track Invitational on Friday, April 5, at Dutch Clark and the Thunder-Storm Invitational on Saturday, April 6th at CSU-P.”
