Soccer Team Comes Up Short Against Stiff Competition

The Rye High School Girls Soccer team faced the stiffest competition year to date over the last week and dropped a pair of matches.

Last Thursday, in what Head Coach Mike Wing describes as “the best team we faced” Lamar downed the Thunderbolts 4-1. The match in Lamar, saw the home team jump to a 3-0 lead at halftime and continue on with a 1-1 deadlock in the second half.

Sydney Adamson scored the lone goal for Rye on an assist from her sister, Sophie Adamson. Sophie also had three steals in the contest. Alexia Provenza had four steals.

Sharing the goal keeping duties, Stephanie Bak had 16 saves and Kaitlyn Taylor had a dozen saves.

On Saturday, Rye was again on the road traveling to Fountain Valley where they lost 9-1. Fountain Valley outscored Rye 6-0 in the first half and 3-1 in the second half.

Sydney Adamson again scored the lone goal. Provenza had six steals and Morgan Elarton and Mazzy Miller had four steals each. Rye now has a 3-5 record overall and are 1-2 in the league standings. They have dropped their last five contests after a 3-0 start.

Tuesday night Rye hosted Trinidad and tonight (Thursday) they will host Delores Huerta Prep. Saturday, they face James Irwin on the home field.

“We faced some tough teams this week,” shared Wing. “The girls played hard but just came up short.”
