Rye Track Team Brings Home Gold at Steel City Track Meet

Isaiah Guzman won the gold medal in the triple jump at the Steel City Fast Track Invitational held at Dutch Clark Stadium last Friday with a wind aided leap of 41’9”. A second gold, almost went to RHS Senior Jaklyn Newitt who threw the shot put 31’2” but ended up settling for a silver medal instead. Newitt also threw the discus 94’2” which was good for 5th place.

Guzman added a bronze medal to his collection for the day in the long jump, where he launched himself into the air and landed 20’5” later to claim third. For the girls’ team, Hailey George captured the bronze in the 100meter hurdles where she clocked a time of 17.74 seconds.

Kendall Himmelberg placed 4th in the girls’ triple jump with a jump of 31’9”. Himmelberg also placed 12th in the long jump with a jump of 14’4”. Mathius Lorenz threw the shot put 39’ 1.25” in the boys’ half of the meet for 5th place in that event. In that same event, Derick Bak threw the shot 38’10” which was good for 7th place.

David Maroney placed 8th in the 3200-meter run, completing the event in a time of 10:58.19.

Maroney also placed 12th in the 1600 meter run in a time of 5:10.86.

In addition to her bronze medal in the 100-meter hurdles, Hailey George got 9th in the 100meter dash (13.71 seconds) and 9th in the long jump (14’8”), and placed 11th in the 300-meter hurdles (56.02 seconds).

Four relay teams placed in the top 20. The girls’ 800-meter sprint medley relay team placed 10th in a time of 2:13.12 and the 4x200 meter relay team placed 11th in a time of 2:17.32. The 800-sprint medley relay featured Ming Tam, Aisha Farney, Taya Hutcheson, and Aleesyah Frazier. The four legs of the 4x200 relay were Gwen Larson, Sofa Crosson, Kayla Himmelburg and Ozzria Garrison.

The boys’ 4x400 relay team finished 10th in a time of 4:05.87.

Running the 4x400 were Mason Ford, Josh George, Derick Bak, and Isaiah Guzman. The boys’ 4x200 meter relay team placed 12th in a time of 1:47.17.

Members of the team were Enoch Farney, Damien Pacheco, Justin Siduyla, and Josh George.

Emmyle Varner placed 12th in the discus with a throw of 77’7”.

Teammate Madison Heasley placed 15th in the same event.

She hit the 74’4” mark. Varner also placed 17th in the shot put with a toss of 26’0”.

Taye Hutcheson placed 15th in the long jump with a 14’3”. She also placed 16th in the triple jump with a mark of 28’2”.

Rylan Baker threw the discus 103’3” which was good for 16th place.

Ming Tam placed 19th in the 400meter dash is a time of 1:15.35.

Hyrum Peterson also placed 19th.

He did it in the 300-meter hurdles which he ran in a time of 52.42.

Rounding out top twenty finishers were Carter Ford who placed 20th in the triple jump with a leap of 34’6” and Timothy Blackhurst who ran the 3200 meter in a time of 12:27.98, also good for 20th.

Head Coach Connor Pigg was pleased. “It was a good to start to see some of our relays take shape. There were a number of personal records, especially in the field events.”

Last Monday the team went to a meet at CSU-Pueblo which will be reported next week. Thursday the League Tournament will be held at Walsenburg High School.
