Rye Baseball Team Rolls to Three Wins

The Rye High School baseball team outscored a pair of opponents 47-3 last week and easily won three games to move their record to 5-3 and 2-1 in league play.

On April 2, Rye hosted Florence and downed the visitors 17--2. Will Hamler scored three runs, drove in three runs and had a double in the victory. Brandon Benz drove in two runs and walked twice, and Blake Walton walked twice and stole a pair of bases. Walton was also a perfect five for five in the field.

Axton Ehrlich, and Branson Burbidge both had two hits and Aydin Swald drove in two runs.

Ehrlich was the winning pitcher, allowing one hit and one earned run in two innings of work. He struck out five and walked two. Benz also worked two innings. He allowed one hit, struck out five and walked three.

On April 6, the Thunderbolts continued their dominance hosting John Mall High School and not giving up a single hit in a double header. In the first game which Rye won 15-0 Hamler, Swald, and Burbidge blanked the John Mall hitters while striking out eight and walking one.

In the second game, Ehrlich, and Benz struck out four, gave up no hits and one unearned run is a 21-1 victory.

There was plenty of hitting by the Thunderbolts. In the first game freshman Pierce Burris had two hits, drove in three runs, had a double and stole a pair of bases. Hamler had two hits, scored three runs and had two stolen bases.

Benz scored three times, and Walton drove in four runs. Walton also continued to play error free ball handling four put-outs in four attempts.

In the second game, Walton had four hits and drove in two runs. Benz scored four times and had three hits and Burbidge had two runs batted in.

Rye is currently ranked #16 in 2A. Wednesday night they went to Salida (1-2) to face the #36 ranked 3A team. Saturday they will travel to Crowley for a doubleheader. Crowley is currently 4-4 and is ranked #21 in 2A.
