Girls Basketball Team Looks for Return Trip to State

Rye High School Girls’ Basketball Head Coach Kermit Spencer has much to be optimistic about. Spencer, in his 5th year as Head Coach has six returning varsity players, four of whom are seniors. These girls traveled to state last year and have experience at the postseason level.

He also feels he has some very promising upcoming players waiting in the wings to make a positive impact on the team.

“I am planning on making both offensive and defensive changes this year,” Spencer shared. “We have different personnel and so we have to make adjustments. I believe we can make another run at the state title, but to do so, I’ll need to resolve and overcome shortcomings and faults in my coaching strategies/decisions, which I feel truly hurt us last year.”

Spencer feels it is to early to determine who his toughest competition in the Santa Fe League will be but as always, feels a lot of quality coaches in the league will develop challenges for the Lady T’s on the court.

Due to COVID restrictions summer camps were not held again this year but Spencer feels confident his team will make up the time and skill lapse because of that. “I feel we have lots of work to do, but I also believe this group is extremely competitive and capable of overcoming most any obstacle and will be very successful,” he opined.

One hole Spencer does have left to fill. Assistant Jody Poole is now the Principal at Craver Middle School and Spencer is aware of the currently unfilled gap while he looks to replace her.
