Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor:

Even though we moved from the area some 11 years ago, Glenys and I stay ultraconnected in spirit with our dear friends in the Greenhorn Valley.

Your fine editorial about voting for the best person really hit a button, for I've always considered myself a pragmatic constitutional conservative and will always vote for the best person regardless of party. What I recall of Sheriff Kirk Taylor mirrors your observations.

Of course, as a Christian like you, I look for Christian candidates, but I recall that some of our outstanding Founding Fathers were not considered Christian, but were among the finest men on the earth at a time we needed them. It’s the principles and character not the religion that matters most in elective office.

Punishing someone because they vote for the best candidate in their eyes is never a good thing. I recall Ralph Hall (D-Texas), one of the last standing conservative Democrats who became a good friend when we lived in North Texas.

During that friendship, he worked on lowering taxes, reducing the regulatory load on business and helping those of limited means to enjoy home ownership, even in Section 8 housing. He helped then-HUD Secretary Jack Kemp, another good friend of mine, in a pilot program that made it possible for Section 8 residents to own their apartments/condos and, thereby drive out drug dealers and gang violence from those areas. What a miraculous change was brought to those once troubled areas!

Here, we had a fantastic fellow who was a Republican work with a great fellow who was a Democrat to accomplish something that improved life for everyone.

Thank you for reminding us that we are all in this together and every person's opinion matters. From that we make far fewer mistakes and make life better for all.
