The May 15 Sangre de Cristo Volunteers for Community (VFC) Board Meeting revealed the organization has recently received two large donations. VFC President Judi Patrick told the board members that Susan Kalman had sent a $10,000 check to be used toward the mortgage on the building. Patrick said she had already applied the donation to the mortgage.
Robert Johnson informed the board that the Willow Creek Gift Shop in Colorado City closed its doors on May 14 and donated their entire remaining inventory to the VFC. He said the inventory amounted to several pickup loads of very saleable stock, valued at approximately $4,580.
The board discussed using some of the smaller items as give-a-way items at Greenhorn Valley Days.
Johnson said he is doing research on the best way to sell the inventory items as well as some of the more high-end items that had been donated for the last yard sale.
With board members attending the meeting via zoom and in-person recent and upcoming activities were reviewed, as were financial standings.
The recent yard sale was reported to show over $3,000 in sales, and the classes that are held on a donation basis at the Community Center are providing a small income.
Bingo will be returning to the VFC Center starting in June. An issue with officials misunderstanding the organization's bylaws has been resolved and the Bingo license has been issued. Bingo is scheduled to begin June 6, which will also be the date of the addition of the Thursday SRDA lunches.
The SRDA Senior meals for persons 60 and over continue to be offered every Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., with the Thursday, June 6, meals being an additional day of service. To participate in the senior meals reserve your meal by calling (719) 543- 0100 any day prior to 9:00 a.m. on the morning you are interested in attending the lunch. The lunches include a hot meal and dessert. Frozen meal packs are also available to take home. Request the frozen meal service when you call in your reservation for the lunches. SRDA transportation is provided by calling Rick Erickson, van driver, at (719) 320-2983.
Board members shared frustration about needing to make the community more aware of who the VFC is, what they do, and the availability of the Community Center for rental. They hope to expand on each of these areas to help increase income and create additional opportunities.
Following the train of thought to be more visible in the community, a new Facebook page was discussed. The new page would be listed under Volunteers for Community or VFC, dropping the Sangre de Cristo portion of the name for Facebook connectivity only.
The VFC has been invited to purchase a booth at the Greenhorn Valley Days and possibly conduct a craft class for children during the event. Plans are underway.
The return of the VFC Craft Fair was discussed and encouraged. Patrick shared that vendors last year requested the event to start earlier and to include food trucks. The Craft Fair is tentatively set for the first Saturday in November.
The next board meeting for the VFC is scheduled for Wednesday, June 19, at 2:00 p.m. at the Susan Kalman Community Center, 4705 Santa Fe Dr in Colorado City.
