Ruben Espinoza Fishing Derby a Community Tribute

GREENHORN VALLEY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

It is time for fun and fishing on Saturday, June 17, as the Greenhorn Valley Chamber presents the Rueben Espinoza Fishing Derby of 2023 at Lake Beckwith in Colorado City.

With renewed energy and interest being poured into this event it is shaping up to be one for the books.

The fishing derby will be held from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Day of event registration and instructions will be held from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Fishing time is 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with lunch being served starting at 11:30 a.m.

Awards and prizes will be given at 1:00 p.m. Prizes will be given for the largest fish in each age category. Anyone is welcome to come and fish, but prizes are limited to those 15 years of age and younger.

A free fishing kit will be provided to those youth who RSVP via an email to greenhorn- chamber.org. The fishing kit will include a fishing pole, a water bottle, and a tackle box with gummy worms.

But it is not all about fishing contests, a toddler fishing pool, field games, an art table, and carnival games will all be set up along with a shady place for both adults and children to relax. Change Agent will be providing live music.

This Greenhorn Valley Chamber event is held in memory of Rueben Espinoza, a longtime Greenhorn Valley resident who loved his community, Lake Beckwith, fishing, people in general, and above all, children. Espinoza was a Colorado City Metropolitan District employee and was a big fishing derby and local youth supporter. Since his death in 2019, the annual fishing derby has been named after him, and his widow and children help support the event in his memory.
