Rye Volleyball Tournament this Weekend Important for Post-Season

The Rye High School volleyball team is accustomed to multiple matches every week, but last week they got a chance to get in extra practice time with their only match coming on the road.

On Thursday they traveled to Walsenburg to down John Mall High School 3-0.

Rye upped their over-all record to 14-5 with a threeset victory: 25-20; 25-18, and 25-9. Their league record is now 11-2.

Jakie Newitt led the Thunderbolts with seven kills and eight assists. Jordan Holgerson, returning from an injury, had five kills, five service aces and nine digs.

Kelsy Stribling had two blocks and five service receptions. Desiree Ruiz had 10 digs and 16 service receptions.

Kaitlyn Taylor had two blocks, Kendall Himmelberg had three aces and Mackenzie Indgjer had five assists for the Lady T’s.

Head Coach Michelle Roy was glad to have Holgerson back in the rotation. “She’s not quite 100%, but she’s getting there,” shared the Thunderbolt mentor.

Roy shared the upcoming week is important for post season placement.

“This week we have our end of season tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Trinidad (9-9) and Jefferson (5-15) on Friday, and Sanford (14-6) on Saturday.

These are non-league matches but must wins in order to set ourselves up for a post season run.”

“This week we will be working on communication and reading an offense. We have been a little slow to react in recent matches and we can’t afford to do that against higher caliber teams,” shared Roy of her practice strategy.

Rye is currently ranked 12th in MaxPreps 2A rankings.

Sanford is tagged as 15th.
