COLORADO CITY
Children grow, and grow fast; that is no secret to parents trying to keep up with their children’s wardrobes. Sometimes it seems you just get items home and the child has outgrown them the next week.
Lindsey Kirby-Brown has found a way to help with the expense and availability of rapidly outgrown kids' clothing and toys. She has opened Kid’s Clothes-N-Things, a unique children’s consignment store. She is currently selling gently used kid’s clothes, shoes, books, sports gear, and seasonal wear.
Located in the Bank of San Juans Plaza, but quietly tucked away on the back side of the bank building, the store is one of the Valley’s hidden gems. Kirby-Brown said she has been waiting since she opened for her business sign to be completed but, due to material availability and a permitting delay, it has not yet been put up.
Kid’s Clothes-N-Things is so much more than clothes or even just kids' stuff. Kirby –Brown stocks a wide variety of books, jewelry, souvenirs, local handmade crafts, as well as a huge inventory of clothing. Gently used clothing nestles next to new items, and blends with up-to-date toys, and boutique items. Vendors can arrange to sell their wares out of the shop for a small monthly fee, which creates a huge variety in a small space.
In addition to selling gently used clothing, Kirby-Brown will offer a store credit on good useable clothing brought in for resale.
Kirby-Brown had been a teacher but decided she needed something more flexible that would work with her kid’s schedules. She and her family moved to the Greenhorn Valley from Fountain, CO a little over a year ago. She has four children: Payton Bryant-Davis who is in middle school, and Wyatt, Maddilyn, and Zaydan Kirby-Brown who attend Rye Elementary. Her husband, Gerritt Kirby-Brown, is a war veteran who now works at the Pueblo Chemical Depot.
After getting settled in their new home, Kirby-Brown decided she would like some type of work to do. With her own four children rapidly outgrowing clothing and toys, she was already exchanging kids’ clothes with friends and neighbors to keep up with their growth. She decided to take it a few steps further, and the idea for her shop was born.
Most days you will find Kirby-Brown taking care of her shop, although Miranda Reyes works on Fridays or if Kirby-Brown has to be away. She explained, “If one of the kids has something going on or I need to be gone, I can count on Miranda to be there for me. She is a big part of this store.”
Having now been open for approximately four months, Kirby Brown is encouraged.
“Some days are slow and some days are better but, overall, it is good,” she shared.
The shop is open Tuesday through Friday. The telephone number is 719-649-1855, and email kidsclothesnthings@ gmail.com.
