Summertime and 4H

Woohoo!!! It is summer, and time to have some fun… but hold on, fun for 4Hers means hard work to prepare for the County Fair. Whether baking, sewing, feeding animals, or working with show animals, every day in the summer for a 4Her brings work. You would think that being in 4H is a walk in the park, but believe me it isn’t!

I show market goats and horses. Each morning, I wake up and go outside and start on chores. Mid-day, I change water and check animals. In the evenings, in addition to feeding chores, I work with my animals (train for the fair), groom, and clean pens. Other kids in our club are prepping their animals (pigs, sheep, goats, cattle, horses, chickens, turkeys, ducks, rabbits, dogs) and working on sewing, baking, photography, and many more projects.

We all work so hard for the one week where we show off our hard work… the week of the Pueblo County Fair. This year, County Fair is going to be better than ever!!! It is free and open to the public and runs from July 22nd through the 30th at the Colorado State Fairgrounds. Many fun events will be happening. For example, Temple Grandin will be speaking on July 26th, there will be a Family Fun Day July 29th and 30th (magic show, ventriloquist and more!), and Cody Cozzolino will be in concert on July 30th!

Visit pueblocountyfair.com for more information on dates of shows and other events. The Greenhorn Valley Kickers hope to see you there! We’d love to show you, our projects.

On another note, our club has also been busy with different community service projects. One of our service projects was at Rye Elementary where we cleaned up the greenhouse area. Another was tying baby blankets for the babies at Parkview nursery. As a club we have done some really fun and helpful community service projects this year! It’s a great time to be in 4H!
