Magnificent Seven Raises Record to 11-0

The Rye High School Girls’ basketball team scored 26 points in the first quarter on the 21st when they hosted Las Animas. LA scored 15 for the entire game. The victory, their 11th without a defeat, has been the rule rather than the exception for the team labeled the “Magnificent Seven” by Head Coach Kermit Spencer.

Currently Rye sits atop the 2A state rankings according to CHSAA. But according to MaxPreps they are ranked 6th with Holyoke at #1. CHSAA places Holyoke in 6th.

Last Friday Sydney Adamson scored 26 points, had five rebounds, and five steals. Sophie Adamson scored 20 points, had seven rebounds, four assists, and six steals. Morgan Elarton had five rebounds. Gracie Graham had three assists, and Jordan Holgerson-Rahl had three assists also.

The Lady T’s shot 50% from the field and 67% from the free throw line.

How good is the Rye team? That’s a question Head Coach Kermit Spencer has. “I also wonder how good we really are? Our defensive rotations are getting better each week,” shared Spencer. “With the new defensive scheme we implemented, I feel like it’s taken some time to get use to and adjust to and it’s really paying off. I think this shows even when we are not at our best offensively, defensively, we’ve kep our opponents away from scoring.” As for focus by a team that

As for focus by a team that wins blowout after blowout? “I think it’s in their DNA to want to be, not only better, but the best. This group has always been the group that has worked outside of practice time in order to become who they are today,” assessed Spencer. “I’ve watched them over the years to grow and develop. I truly believe it’s what sets them apart. They have a mindset of a very dedicated and determined group of individuals who together, perform amazingly as a team.”

Spencer feels like the next nine days will test the teams grit and drive as they play six games in that time period. Tonight (Thursday) they face Swink followed by John Mall, Crowley County, Swallows Academy, Hoehne and Fowler.

Hoehne is looking like a major test. As of Tuesday, they are 11-1. They are ranked 10th in the state by CHSAA and ninth by Max Preps. They are also members of the Santa Fe League so the game holds league as well as post season implications. That game is in Rye and is scheduled for February 1.
