RYE FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT
Cody Scheid carries two badges. In his full-time job he is a deputy with the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) and assigned to the Emergency Services Bureau.
On a part-time basis he works for the Rye Fire Protection District (RFPD).
“I wish I could work more for Rye Fire,” Scheid shared in a telephone interview on Monday.
“But it’s still a second job and I try to work as many hours as I can. I’m just not there as much time as I’d like to be.”
Scheid has been with RFPD for between 2-3 years.
He is certified as a Wildland Fire and Fire Weather Behavior specialist, has his EMT and Hazmat Highway technician certifications and is classified as a Fire Fighter I- basic. He is also trained in mitigation skills, which fall under a Wildlife Urban Interface Evaluator classification.
When he wears his other badge, for the PCSO where he has worked for the last six years, he is the coordinator for a number of volunteers and equipment. Volunteers who do hazmat work, search and rescue, dive work, the mounted patrol and volunteer fire work all pass through the purview of Scheid. In addition, he often has regular deputy duties.
Valley born and raised, and son of Terry and Brenda Scheid, Cody is married to Erica, a Registered Nurse working as an Emergency Room Educator at Parkview.
They both love to ride horses, rope, and be outdoors.
When asked what hobbies they had Scheid’s first response was, “Anything that has to do with horses or ranches.”
“I grew up here,” Scheid shared. “When I looked around for a way to have some more valuable experience in my professional career, I looked toward Rye Fire. Rye Fire is a little more laid back, so you get a better chance to learn. Pueblo has so many calls that you go from one to another. It gets busy here as well but you get a chance to talk to the guys and review the positive events of a call, along with things you could have done better.”
Scheid loves the way everyone is willing to work with him even though he isn’t at RFPD as much as he would like to be. “Everyone is willing to help out,” he opined.
“It’s nice to watch relationships grow, whichever badge I’m wearing for the day.”
