Just when you think they are doing all that they can for our community, the Volunteers for Community find new ways to brighten our days.
The kickoff of the Thursday Senior Resource Development Agency (SRDA) lunches and the return of Bingo at the VFC Center was well attended and very enjoyable.
The SRDA lunches are served from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the VFC building at 4705 Santa Fe Drive on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please remember to reserve a meal in advance by calling SRDA at (719) 543-0100 by 9:00 a.m. the day of the anticipated meal. Participants for the meal need to be at least 60 years old and reside in Pueblo County.
The return of Bingo last Thursday was a hoot. The turnout for the first day was not huge, only about ten players competed for the Bingo prizes and everyone shared a lot of laughs. Bingo starts at 1:00 pm.
VFC volunteer Melvin Nigh helped participants pick out their lucky cards at the door. The cards cost 50 cents each per game, and you can purchase as many as you can play. You can also purchase more cards or exchange cards between games. Minors can participate in playing the Bingo games but the cards must be purchased by an adult over 18.
Certified Bingo caller Roxie Frank gave a quick run-down of rules and explained the various games that would be offered that day. Then she set the balls to bouncing and the fun was on!
Frank’s quick wit, sense of humor, and good-natured tolerance for some gentle heckling when players needed that one certain number to come up made for one laugh after another.
VFC President Judi Patrick assisted with confirming that the Bingos were valid and handling the payout of prizes.
There were six games played on Thursday with a break in the middle of the games. Diagrams were on the tables for the patterns needed for the games and Frank and Patrick explained them well. Fellow players were also eager to assist one another, so even if you had never participated in Bingo games it is fun.
By participating in Bingo you will not only be building friendships and having fun, you are helping to support the many good works of VFC, which include Stella’s pantry, cardboard recycling, the community garden, a yearly Easter egg hunt, Christmas gifts for local kids, highway cleanup days and other projects conducted by Sangre de Cristo Volunteers for Community.
