Dear Editor,
A few months ago, I woke up to the fact that redistricting had resulted in my town, Trinidad, Colorado, now being in the 3rd Congressional District, and that Lauren Boebert is now my representative. Of course, I had heard of her; who hasn’t? But, I didn’t know much about her performance. So, I started Googling.
What I discovered is that she is not qualified to serve.
During her first term in Congress, she has become nationally known for her inflammatory language and attention-grabbing antics but has been ineffective in passing legislation.
She doesn’t understand the important difference between the Senate and the House of Representatives.
While senators work on issues of national and international importance, House members usually focus more narrowly, upon the interests of the residents of their home district. Boebert has garnered a lot of attention as a fighter for right-wing causes, like unregulated access to assault weapons, defiance of COVID restrictions and the corporate exploitation of our public lands. But, she has failed as a lawmaker — getting zero bills passed or even through the committee process. Her extremism has alienated her, not only from Democrats, but also from centrist Republicans. This has resulted in her miserable ranking; 433 out of 435 House members, on an index of bipartisanship (The McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University.)
Our 3rd District includes citizens of different religions, lifestyles and political affiliations, and Boebert has a responsibility to represent us all. But, she has alienated herself by focusing so narrowly on extreme Christian fundamentalism and antidemocratic Trumpism.
Sincerely, Doug Holdread Trinidad, CO Dear Editor: I’m writing to publicly thank two of Huerfano County’s most able musicians, Ken Saydak and Mark Craddock, for the unforgettable evening they gave a lucky and appreciative audience at the grand opening of Colorado City’s new venue, the Peaks to Prairie Community Center. These two bluesmen kept the crowd rocking for almost two hours as they knocked it through the roof with Ken on piano and Mark on sax, playing from Ken’s internationally acclaimed repertoire. The concert was free to all comers, The musicians were generous enough to stay a bit and chat with members of the audience as they put away their instruments. A huge thanks to both Ken and Mark for an indelible evening of music and a fitting high point for our community center’s grand opening! Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Susan Kalman President, VFC Dear Editor, The Rye High School Band would like to thank to those of you in this magnificent valley for donating to the program to help raise funds for marching band uniforms. So far we have been able to raise more than $20,000 to the program! We are so grateful for your support in bringing back the Marching Band. It really means a lot to the students that they will have a uniform to compete in for the 2023 fall season. It has been around 15 years since Rye High School had a marching band. We are still accepting donations to help us procure music equipment, carts, an enclosed trailer and hire show designers for the 2023 return of the competitive Thunderbolt Marching Band.
Checks and donations are made to the Rye High School Music Program. If you have any questions contact the music director.
Sincerely, Ian R. Watson Music Director Rye High School, Craver Middle School
