Viewpoint: Yes, We’ve Had an Events Calendar for Over a Year

On p. 7 of this newspaper is a complete list of every comment in the last few months about the newspaper, taken directly from the people who wrote them. Below is an example of some responses with the heading, as they were written. There is a common thread. These readers want a monthly calendar so they can keep up on the events in the valley.

What would you like to see more of in the Greenhorn Valley View?

Local news and information on events in the valley.

More timely posting of local events.

Local events before they happen!

Ideas you have to improve the quality of the newspaper, overall: Put in community calendar events at library, chamber of commerce.

Community events list by dates in calendar format.

News items you would like us to look in to for publication: How about a “monthly” “events” calendar. So often I’m reading articles about events that have already happened and I would have attended or participated in had I know in advance.

When we renovated our website almost two years ago, we provided that calendar; we have that list of events before they happen. Not only do we have a calendar, we mention it in every single newspaper we publish, steering readers to our free website where, on the right-hand side of the home page, they can look up events for at least the next several weeks.

We have written specific stories at least a half dozen times mentioning the new website, including mention of the Calendar of Events and inviting you to submit events....

The print version of everything coming up in the valley that we know about is is on page 4.

We’re mentioning it again here, in the Viewpoint.

Let me be more specific in helping to direct you to the calendar of upcoming events.

1) access www.greenhornvalleyview. com in your browser.

2) Hit enter. The home page of our website will appear.

3) Scroll down, and on the right-hand side of the page about halfway down you will come to a calendar.

4) Click on any of the times listed on one of the days, and you will be taken to that event.

5) Directly under the word ‘calendar’ you will see arrows which will allow you to get to specific months.

Normally, we are 4-6 weeks ahead on things, but not always.

We post only the events that we are aware of and that people let us know about. We’d love to know about more things. We hesitate to peruse social media for events, as we prefer to ensure accuracy when possible.

A simple email to editor@greenhornvalleyview.com will let us know about your event.

We don’t include sporting events on our website calendar because we produce an Athletic Calendar for each season. Sponsors display a poster-sized athletic calendar for you, as well. Out of fairness to those who do advertise, we do use discretion on events designed to raise money. An advertisement will do much more than a mere calendar mention, and we believe an event organizer would want to take advantage of both.

If you read about a lot of events that you didn’t know were happening, it’s pretty likely that we didn’t know either. And we apologize. But, maybe, you didn’t look at the calendar on our website, you don’t subscribe to the newspaper, or your retention level is becoming like mine – fuzzy.

Hopefully, you will let us know about things that are coming up in the valley or advertise your events for interested readers.

And we’ll keep sniffing out those exciting activities that you didn’t know about ahead of time.
