The Aspen Acres Fire started around 6:20 a.m. on June 29, 2026, and rapidly grew to over 23,000 acres with 0% containment in less than twelve hours.
Sunday, June 21, brought evacuation orders to the Applewood Estates community in Colorado City due to a Highway I-25 fire that blew into the area. Firefighting efforts brought the fire under control quickly but several homes were destroyed by the blaze. Courtesy Photo

According to the Pueblo County Sheriff ’s Office (PCSO), the Applewood Fire started at 6:20 p.m, Sunday, as a wildland fire near Mile Marker 73 on Interstate 25 southbound. The fire is believed to have been caused by sparks created from metal dragging from a vehicle on the interstate.
