COLORADO HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOC.
The CHSAA All-Star Football game, held at CSUPueblo on June 16, qualifies as one of the longest games in Rye High School Football Coach Connor Pigg’s career.
Pigg had been selected as one of the five coaches for the south squad. He was defensive coordinator and in charge of the kickoff and punt return teams by his peers.
The game was delayed for two hours because of rain. A 30-minute game stoppage occurred in the 3rd quarter when the lights went out.
The south team lost the game on a last second field goal at the stroke of midnight. Keep in mind, the game was to begin at 7:30 p.m.
The lone, south touchdown was a 60-yard interception return. Rye fans are all sure the defensive coordinator had his hand in that.
The forty-three senior, south squad included Rye’s Devin Samuelson, who was unable to play because of a season ending injury.
Samuelson was still involved in many aspects of the team’s preparation and participation.
Pigg and his talented Thunderbolt team won the Tri-Peak Championship last fall with a perfect 5-0 league record. Pigg was also given the “Coach of the Year” award by the league, and that number one finish was an important part of Pigg’s selection for the All-Star coaching assignment.
This was Pigg’s first selection as a coach for the All-Star Football game. He just completed his fifth year as Head Coach of the RHS team. In those five years he has amassed a 22-17 record.
Pigg began his coaching career in 2015 and served as an assistant coach for three years under Jeff Bailey.
In addition to the League Championship this year, Pigg’s teams have also finished third three times and fourth on one occasion.
