Much Improved Peyton Team Falls to Thunderbolt Football Team

The Rye High School football team returned to their winning ways against a much-improved Peyton team on the home field last Friday night, winning by a score of 28-12.

Dylan Hurne scored all four touchdowns for the Thunderbolts and Kyran Baker added all four extra points in the victory which gives Rye a 5-2 record for the season.

Hurne carried the ball 35 times for 294 yards in the contest.

Quarterback Nolan Schauer completed 10 of 15 passes for 134 yards through the air. As has been the case most of the year, Schauer’s favorite receiver was Brendan Gray who caught three passes for 91 yards.

Rye recovered fumbles on Peyton’s first two drives. The second fumble recovery led to a 60-yard drive to score at the end of the first quarter and take a 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter after Rye missed a 30-yard field goal attempt, Peyton took over on downs. Peyton traveled 80 yards and their tailback found the endzone on a counter play. Dayton Block got a paw up and blocked the PAT setting the score at 7-6.

With less than 1:30 left in the first half, Hurne threw a 45-yard pitch pass to Grey to get down the field and on the next play, Hurne took the hand off and went 25 yards for the touchdown. At halftime Rye led 14-6.

The third quarter went back and forth until Peyton blocked a Rye punt and in three plays scored. A two-point conversion attempt failed and going into the final quarter Rye led 14-12.

In the 4th quarter according to Head Coach Connor Pigg, Rye hit their stride. They scored a five play 60-yard touchdown and put together a 75-yard three play drive to make the final score 2812.

Derick Bak led the defense with 15 tackles and Hurne had a dozen tackles himself. Cael Sirbu had an interception to add to the defensive performance.

“We think we can play with Banning Lewis. They are a wellcoached and incredibly athletic team,” summarized Pigg. “Looking at what they did to CSCS is mostly rooted in offensive and defensive line play. CSCS couldn't protect their backfield and struggled to stop Banning's two headed run game. If we are going to be competitive in this one, we are going to have to lean on our big guys and fight like dogs in the trenches. Our Line units get a level up this week as James Scott will be making his season debut after suffering a leg fracture in our scrimmage.”

Banning Lewis defeated CSCS 48-0. The contest Friday will be in the Thunderdome. Banning Lewis is 7-0 and ranked #9 in 1A Colorado football. Rye is currently ranked #20.
