Last week contained some eventful days: Election Day, the United States Marine Corps 247th Birthday, and Veterans Day.
Election Day resulted in the typical delayed 'cliffhangers and nailbiters,' but all indications are that too many voters have a vested interest in maintaining the sorry status quo – so be it.
On a lighter note, a big Semper Fi shout out to all Marines on their 247th birthday. The birthday is on November 10th followed by Veterans Day on the 11th.
There was a standing joke in the Corps that Veterans Day, a day-off, was sober up day.
Anyway, to all veterans out there, I hope you got your well-deserved recognition.
Speaking of recognition, I experienced a surprise visit from some good neighbors down the hill: a mother offering a plate of delicious cinnamon rolls and her son, Hunter, and daughter, Bentley, each presenting me with letters.
First, from Hunter: 'Dear Mr. Powers, Thank you for fighting for our country. I think you are really brave and strong. I think you are a hero. Love, Hunter, Age 6.'
And then, from Bentley: 'Dear Mr. Powers, Thank you for your service. Thank you for protecting our freedom and for your hard work. Thank you for all you've done for us. Your bravery, sacrifice, and strength do not go unnoticed. Thanks to you and your family for all you've given to the country. Love, Bentley, Age 10.'
You know? When I started this letter I was going to base it on my disappointment with the election results compounded by the direction this country is taking, and ending it with the question of whether it all was really worth fighting for. A public thank you to Hunter, Bentley, and their mom for snapping me out my doldrums.
And to leave no stone unturned, I would like to give special credit to the Awana ministry of the Valley Community Church of Rye for encouraging such an effort.
Enough said.
Anthony C. Powers
