Hurne Rolls for Three Touchdowns,

Dylan Hurne scored three rushing touchdowns and quarterback Nolan Schauer threw for one as the Rye High School Thunderbolts won their opening game of the season on the road over Manitou Springs 27-12.

Hurne packed the pigskin 34 times and rolled for 231 yards in the victory. That is an average of nearly seven yards per carry, including one romp of 55 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Schauer threw the ball 20 times, completing 14, for 193 yards, including one 48-yard gem. Derick Bak was the recipient of nine of those passes as he got 95 yards for the night.

All told Rye accumulated 504 all purpose yards in the season opener.

On defense Hurne had seven tackles including one sack.

Codah Graber also had seven tackles and picked off a Manitou Springs pass. Brendan Gray also had seven tackles to round out the Thunderbolt version of the three Musketeers.

Kyran Baker took care of kickoff duties and hit one of three point after attempts.

Rye drove the distance on the opening drive but fumbled in the red zone. The following ball possession they put together a 60-yard drive with Hurne scoring from 10 yards out. Hurne added a 55-yard touchdown in the second quarter and Derick Bak converted for two points on a misdirection play. The score was 14-0 Rye, at halftime.

In the 4th quarter Manitou put together a drive and had their passing game going. Manitou put together a 65-yard drive and completed a pass to make the score 14-6. On the following drive Rye answered with a 65yard drive of our own. Hurne scored on 3rd and goal to make it 20-6.

As Manitou was working to respond Codah Graber got an interception and then a few plays later wrestled in a TD pass thrown by Nolan Schauer.

“It was a good game for us,” shared Head Coach Connor Pigg.

Rye is on the road again this week. They travel to Salida for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Salida shut out Woodland Park last week 16-0.
