teams in those events qualify for the state meet. The final meet of the regular season will be held at Pueblo West this Friday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
In the balance is not only victory in the Pueblo West meet but the opportunity to qualify for the 18 spots at the state track meet in each 2A event.
On May 5, 50 schools descended on the CSUThunderdome giving athletes an opportunity to move up the qualifying board. Here are Rye High School finishers in the top 20 in each event.
Jordan Holgerson returned after missing most of the season with an ACL tear. As part of her rehab, it was determined she would only throw the shot put. And throw it she did with a mark of 34’1” which was good for a 4th place finish in the 50 team meet and an 11th place spot currently in that event, which would qualify her for state.
The boys’ team also had a 4th place finish. Isaiah Guzman did a 42’ triple jump to place 4th. He currently holds the number 6 place in that event in the state rankings. Guzman also sits at 16th in the long jump.
Garret George finished 9th in the 110-meter hurdles at CSU-Pueblo, running them in 17.99 seconds. George is currently 14th in the state in that event.
The boys’ 4x400 meter relay team also placed 9th in the meet last week in a time of 3:49.60. George was joined by Mason Ford, Derick Bak, and Guzman. The relay team is not currently in the top 18 but is certainly close enough to be a contender going into the final week.
Jaklyn Newitt placed 10th in the shot put with a throw of 30’7”. Newitt is also very close to the top 18 with one week left.
Kendall Himmelberg did a 31’6” wind aided triple jump to place 12th last weekend. She is currently in the 24th spot in that event, so she only has to move past half a dozen people in the final week.
Also in 12th on Friday was the boys’ 4x800 meter relay team. They ran the race in a time of 9:57.99 which was their season best. Ford, Colton Hendricksen, David Maroney and Derek Sheets ran the four legs. They are close to being in the top 18.
Hailey George placed 14thin the triple jump with a jump of 30’4”. George also placed 15th in the long jump with a leap of 14’7”. And she was 16th in the 100-meter hurdles in a season best time of 18.41. George is currently 17th in the 300-meter hurdles and would qualify for state as of now.
Jaklyn Newitt threw the discus 89’2” which was good for 15th on Friday. The girls medley relay team placed 15th in a season best time of 2:14.09. Sofia Crosson, Gwen Larson, Hayley Newitt, and Clara Chandler ran the four legs and they are also still in the hunt of a state spot.
The boys 4x200 meter relay team had a season best time of 3:49.60. That was good for 16th place. George, Ford, Guzman and Bak ran the four legs. They are very much in the race for a state position.
Garret George placed 18th in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 45.05. George is currently 22nd in that event.
