Letter to the Editor

In the interest of accuracy, I am responding to a recent letter to the editor, in which the author asks the question: Does our constitution state that we are “One nation under God”? The answer is No!, the constitution does not state that. The phrase comes from a recent (1954) change in the Pledge of Allegiance, which was first proposed in 1892, long after our constitution was written and enacted. The original Pledge did not include “under God”, which was only added in 1954, at the behest of President Eisenhower.
