Runs into Tough Lamar Team
The Rye High School volleyball team stayed in the unbeaten column in the Santa Fe League and stayed positive but struggled to read the Lamar offense and dropped their first match of the season on the road.
On August 30, Rye swept Swallows Charter Academy, 25- 12; 25- 17; and 25- 19 at Swallows. Jordan Holegerson had five kills and three blocks in the victory.
Sophomore Kelsy Stribling had four kills and five aces from the service line.
Jakie Newitt added four more aces and four assists.
Senior Kaitlyn Taylor had three blocks and Desiree Ruiz had three digs and 11 service receptions.
Mackenzie Indgjer had six assists.
“ It was nice to get our second league win,” shared Head Coach Michelle Roy.
On the first day of September, also on the road, Rye ran into what Coach Roy referred to as “ possibly our toughest match of the season” against Lamar.
The Lady T’s ended up on the wrong side of the score 12- 25; 14- 25, and 11- 25.
“ We knew going into it they would be tough,” shared Roy. “ The girls stayed positive and kept encouraging each other throughout but that isn’t enough when you play top level teams.”
Holgerson had three kills, four blocks, four digs and 12 service receptions in the loss.
Newitt had four blocks and seven assists.
Ruiz had four digs and 15 service receptions. Isabella Bond had a pair of kills and four blocks. Taylor had seven blocks.
The loss puts Rye at 4- 1 for the season and 2- 0 in league. The Thunderbolts are currently ranked 4th in 2A by Max Preps.
Rye had a home match on Tuesday after press time against John Mall. Today ( Thursday) they travel to Pueblo Central and host Las Animas on Saturday in the friendly confines of the Rye gymnasium.
“ We have two league matches to prepare for, in addition to our match vs.
Central,” summarized Roy.
“ We will be working on communication and reading the
opponents offense.”
