The September 20, Pueblo Public School District 70 (D70) Board of Education meeting included information from the superintendent, assistant superintendent, and members of the board.

During his portion of the board meeting, John Christenson reported that he has toured the Rye area schools and is pleased to find that Craver Middle School air conditioning is working, and the Rye High School (RHS) roof is nearing completion.

Christenson praised Willdan Group, the designbuild lead for D70’s bond projects, for stepping up and getting these tough work projects accomplished.

Later in the bond update, Bond Manager Ted Ortiviz confirmed that the RHS roofing project is nearly completed, and that the parking lot and press box area are receiving much-needed attention.

Ortiviz said Craver Middle School is now adequately cooled, although there is still one rooftop cooling unit to be installed.

Ortiviz also stated that the roofing and abatement projects at Beulah School of Science were wrapping up and expected to meet the completion date of September 26.

According to Ortiviz’ financial update, $36,773,000 of the bond funds have been spent, leaving $38,227,000 remaining to be used.

Superintendent Ed Smith offered praise for the Pueblo County High School Drama Club play and video, No One Hears You Unless You Scream. He also praised Roxie Pignanelli for many years of background and prep work in bringing the play with its sensitive topic to life.

Ronda Rein, Assistant Superintendent, presented a recommendation that the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between D70 and Pueblo Community College regarding the renewal of the annual contract for concurrent enrollment classes be passed. She advised this MOU would continue the partnership with PCC regarding the ASCENT and teacher retention education programs.

The next scheduled D70 Board of Education meeting is Tuesday, October 4, at 6:00 p.m. at the Educational Services Center, 24951 E.
