For the seventh time, supporters and well wishers will take to the cold waters of Lake Beckwith to raise money for the Maggie Drew Peters’ Memorial Polar Plunge. This year the plunge will be in March instead of the usual November date, but the purpose is the same.

A primary purpose is to raise money for a scholarship fund for seniors at Rye High School. And it is a memorial to Maggie Drew Peters, class of 2018, who passed away in November 2015; in addition to the scholarships it raises awareness about suicide prevention.

The Plunge will take place on Saturday, March 23, at 12:30 p.m. at Lake Beckwith in Colorado City. Pledge forms and waiver releases are available from Karen Hopkins, Maggie’s mother, and throughout the community.

At last year’s Polar Plunge, on November 19, 2012, the Pueblo Dive and Rescue Team had to break a channel through the ice. It was the coldest day in the six years of the event.

Members from Health Solutions Suicide Prevention Coalition will be on hand to share encouraging and helpful brochures.

Release forms need to be turned in prior to the plunge. Donations may be turned in to Karen Hopkins or ENT Credit Union. Karen’s mailing address is P.O. Box 476 in Rye, Colorado 81069. Checks should be made to Maggie Peters Memorial Scholarship. We are a 501(c) (3) tax exempt organization.
