Happy Hookers Socialize While Creating

GREENHORN VALLEY LIBRARY

Come meet your neighbor for conversation and crafting. If you have an interest in any of the fiber arts: crocheting, knitting, embroidery, macrame, etc., join the Happy Hookers. Participants can bring a variety of craft mediums or craft projects including beading, painting, or latch hook rugs, just to name a few. The group provides a chance to get to know your neighbors while doing something you love to do.

The group was started in August 2021, after Terry Wise moved to the area in July 2021 from Littleton, CO. She saw an unmet need for socializing/meeting people, so talked with Linda Lewis, Greenhorn Valley Library Branch Manager, about starting something up.

New members are always welcome. Wise says the meetings are typically a small group, but it is a fluid group.

It just depends on who is in the area, how busy they are, and what projects they are working on. There are three members who have attended since August 2021.

The group works on individual projects, truly selfdirected. They do not offer lessons, although Wise shared, “This is not a teaching group per se. We have accommodated when a person drops in and asks, but someone in the group must be willing to provide the instructions. I have referred people back to YouTube as there is a plethora of videos.

I personally went to that venue to relearn crochet myself after a lapse of 20 years or so.”

The group does not focus on competitions or charity work. It is up to each member what they do with their creations. Wise shared, “I am a 'crochet/hat' making machine; I personally make hats for multiple organizations, some still in the Denver area. Locally, I donated hats for the Rye Cafe bingo as a bingo prize, to the silent auction of the FFA at Rye High School, to the Volunteers for Community’s Stella's food pantry, and Thunderbolt hats for my grandchildren’s teachers.”

The Happy Hookers meet each Monday from 5:00 to 6:45 p.m. at the Greenhorn Valley Public Library, except for when the library has a scheduled closure on a Monday. There are also occasions when they have to cancel the Happy Hookers meetings due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, and notify people on the various Greenhorn Valley Facebook pages. This is a library-sponsored program and is on the schedule/calendar for the library.

Wise says, “People can contact the library, and they refer them to me. Others stop in during the meetings and then come back, and people have contacted me through the Facebook pages, too. If anyone needs to liquidate their yarn, we would be happy to put it to good use.”
