GREENHORN VALLEY VIEW
We asked you to nominate people in the community who improve life for all of us by spreading good cheer, pitching in without thought of recognition, keeping spirits bright, and being a good friend and neighbor.
Nellie Pacheco got back to us almost immediately.
I’m nominating Robert Pacheco, Colorado City. He is the paper man that delivers Colorado City and Rye. He drives all the way to Burnt Mill Road.
Come rain, snow and wind, (If its windy he puts rocks in the bag so the wind doesn’t take the paper). He is a member of St. Aloysius Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is aways there when they have dinners, cooking.
If he sees people stranded on the road he will stop and give his help.
I give a vote for him to be a Christmas Elf.
Nellie Pacheco, Pueblo, Colorado
Sounds elf-worthy, doesn’t he? Thank you, Robert.
The second Elf we would like to recognize is Petra Garcia. In a matter of two days, Petra received three different nominations!
Diane Porter’s letter contained the following.
“For years Petra has donated her time, dollars and energy to help hundreds in our community. Petra has for 14 years coordinated Christmas AND Thanksgiving potluck dinners, venue at the Community Valley Church, with her own money and donations from the community.
Petra has volunteered to manage the Lions Club Chuck Wagon at Lions’ Club events such as the annual Lions Car Show and other events. She coordinates the volunteers to staff the Wagon and then you will see her cooking hamburgers and hotdogs for attendees raising dollars for the Lions’ Club Scholarship programs.
Petra is a member of the Valley Back Pack group that raises dollars throughout the year to purchase back packs and clothing for Greenhorn Valley students. Their major fundraiser is the annual Valley Back Pack Tea at the Community Church where she coordinates the kitchen.
She manages all the volunteers, the intake of the food, displaying, serving and clean up. I am not sure how long the tea has happened in the Valley, but I have gone several years and I know that hundreds of kids have been recipients of VBP and Petra’s dedication to helping members of the Greenhorn Valley.
Petra takes in rescue dogs and cats! She has four dogs and three cats that she has in her home.; her house is still clean too! She will always take in a friend’s dog for the day or during a vacation and she will often go to friend’s homes to feed their pets.
I’m going to stop there on that letter. Jimmie D. Porter shared his reasons for nomination Petra.
“Petra Garcia member of Rye/Colorado City Lions Club which is an International Service Organization. Petra as a Lion has agreed to serve as the Master of the Chuck Wagon and elected to position of Tail Twister.
The Lions Club provides Scholarship funds for Rye High School Students.
Seasonal food baskets and gifts for those in need. In addition, eyesight funding to include eye examination and eyeglasses.
Service Organizations are part of the backbone for those in need and a Lion Member such as Lion Petra is a CHRISTMAS ELF.”
And finally, this letter from Barb Zorc, also nominating Petra.
Petra has chaired the Annual Community Christmas dinner at Valley Community Church for 10-12 years. Anyone can come and enjoy good food and fellowship, so they won't have to be alone on Christmas day Petra is also very active in the Lion's Club and supervisor of the chuck wagon's fundraising efforts. Not to mention she is co-chair of the Benevolence Committee at VCC and instrumental in the Care and Share food distribution which takes place the third Tuesday of every month and available to anyone in the Greenhorn Valley.
I am honored to nominate Petra Garcia as my favorite elf for selfless service and spreading good will and food and cheer!”
I suspect there are more Roberts and Petras out there. I’m also pretty sure elves work all year long; so if you would like to nominate someone for recognition for the part they play in keeping the valley a great place to live, email them to terryekraus@ gmail.com
