PLEASE DO YOUR PART TO PROTECT COLORADO CITY WATER SUPPLY
This letter is written Tuesday morning, September 20, 2022. The Metro Board will have a meeting tonight where a proposal from Rim Rock Heights to extend Colorado City Metro water to the development will be discussed,
would be considered “Extraterritorial” water, as Rim Rock is not within the boundaries of Colorado City. In fact, it is not even adjacent to Colorado City.
If you have looked at a map of Colorado City, you might wonder how our little Lake Beckwith would ever supply water to all the platted lots, especially in a dry year.
Although Colorado City has decent water rights on paper, recent history has shown that paper rights and real, flowing water are two different things. We are entering a (rare) third La Nina ENSO cycle in as many years. This points to another warmer, drier winter. And as you know, the West is in the grips of a twenty year drought.
This current Metro board faces the most important challenges that Colorado City has ever had to deal with - managing water and development issues never before encountered. In this particular time period, circumstances are forming that will affect us for many years.
CCMD must absolutely oppose extra-territorial water ventures. Extra-territorial exportation of water will lead to subsequent challenges to this board, and future boards. It is the Board’s fiduciary duty to maintain the integrity of service delivery to existing and future Colorado City homes and businesses. We already know that keeping our current treatment and delivery of potable water is increasingly challenging.
Please do your part and contact your Metro Board members now, before the next meeting on Tuesday, September 27. Let them know you oppose any water being supplied to developments outside of the Colorado City Metro Boundaries. Or, better yet, come to the meeting to express your views.
