I just finished coaching a season at the Tri-Lakes YMCA in Monument. Seven third and fourth grade girls played basketball for me. One of them was my granddaughter, Kahlynn. My assistant coach, who I also coached in YMCA girls’ basketball many years ago was my daughter, Amber.

Valentine’s Day is the fifth largest spending event in the United States. In 2021, people spent $21.8 billion in the United States on Valentine’s Day. Last year that number rose to $23.9 billion. Candy was the most frequent gift. About half of U.S. adults plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

I thought I had it out of my system. Paying ten cents per plastic bag that is. Colorado, in case you were on vacation last week, has passed legislation requiring business people to charge us ten cents every time we use a plastic bag. I am proud to report that so far, I have paid for ONE.

In just a matter of a few days, laws across the land will go into effect on New Year’s Day. On top of the list for Colorado is a law that was passed in 2020 to take effect in 2023. HB20-1343 requires businesses to stop selling eggs produced by hens in cramped spaces.
