The RHS track team ended their 2012 season at the State Track Meet this past weekend at JEFFCO Stadium in Denver. The Rye team left Wednesday for the three day event. Ty Van Oort was the first RHS athlete to compete on Thursday in what was to be a devastating event. Ty had competed in the shot put at the State Tournament both his sophomore and junior year, doing very well. He was highly ranked in the state all season and expected to place well at state. This being his senior year was his final chance to win. However in preliminaries, he had two throws that went way out of bounds and scratched on another, putting himself out of the contest all together with no score. He came back very strongly in Friday’s discus competition, taking 2nd place with a toss of 159 feet. In other field events for the boys, senior Dalton Jordan placed 7th in the triple jump, leaping 41’ 5”. In the high jump, Rye had two jumpers. Junior Brett Oliver was 5th in the state with a mark of 5’10” and sophomore Sam Ambler jumped 5’8” for 8th place. Rick Reidhead was the lone Rye boy in an individual running event. Rick ran in the 3200m run and finished 14th in 10:57. The boy’s team had one relay team. The 4 X 800m team of Connor Pigg, Dalton Jordan, Rick Reidead, and Sam Ambler finished 14th in 9:04.26.

The first event for the girls was also on Thursday. Rylee Abert and Tiffany Ambler both were in the high jump. Rylee and Tiffany both jumped 4’8”, not enough to place. Also on Thursday was the girls’ 4 X 800m relay. Rye’s team of Britney Slade, Tiffany Ambler, Jayde Van Oort, and Taylor Mansfield had a huge PR of 10:06.58, taking 6th place. Taylor’s split was 2:22 which would have broken the school record in the individual event. The same group of girls also ran the 4 X 400 relay. Prelims were Friday, and they had a time of 4:15.49 and were in 8th place. They finished in 9th place in finals with a time if 4:20.02. Taylor Mansfield also had a trip to the winners’ podium. Taylor finished 5th in the women’s 800m run. Her time was 2:21.34, better than her split in the relay and a new RHS school record in the women’s 800m.

The Thunderbolts had a very successful track and field season. Seniors Ty Van Oort, Conner Pigg, Dalton Jordan, Britney Slade, Tony Vinci, and Tiffany Ambler will be missed next year. We wish them well and a successful future. Thanks to the entire track and field team members and coaches for such an exciting and successful season.
