The Ditch Creek Fire near Beulah has been declared 100 percent controlled by Greg Goodland, fire information officer. The fire burned 80 acres and was started by a lightning strike near the Pueblo and Custer County line.
Goodland sighted higher relative humidity and some overnight rain along with the hard work of the ground crews for the success of the operation.
Over 20 firefighters remain on the scene to continue mop up operations but everyone else has been released for other assignments. Smoldering will continue because access to some of the terrain is nearly impossible.
According to Travis McConnell, firefighter and EMT of the Rye Fire Protection District, a pair of local firefighters assisted for a short period of time with mutual aid. McConnell indicated that the local firefighters aided in locating GPS coordinates for landing zones for the helicopters taking water to the fire.
