Director of Business Services Ryan Elarton shared with the board a list of concerns and needs from each school in the district at the Pueblo County School District 70 regular meeting on Tuesday, May 1. The majority of the issues at the top of each list focused on the safety and security of students. There were also educational and athletic needs on each list. The lists are preparatory work for the budget for next year which makes its initial appearance before May 30.

It also is a preparatory list for the district to decide on the viability of a bond measure to be decided at the next election. Part of the initial process is to look for a liaison, a “Bond Ambassador” in each locale.

The Rye Elementary School had security issues and ADA access requirements on the top of their list. They also listed additional parking, and a grass playground among there needs.

Craver Middle School wanted to include a woodshop, a marquee sign at the school, a new football scoreboard and additional storage.

Rye High School listed making the auxiliary gym usable for sporting events, improvements to the main gym and asbestos abatement.

Representatives from Anthem Insurance were present as the board approved the insurance for the district employees. Employees will save about $8/mo over their premiums last year.

A MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Otero Junior College was approved. Otero works with the district with both Head Start and Migrant Programs.

In the work session following the regular meeting Wayne Snyder of New Farms introduced himself to the board. The group which began in New Mexico helps farmers to market their products. They are interested in leasing the Excelsior school building. The building has been vacant for years and is located between Avondale and Fowler.

The next regular board meeting will be held on May 15, at the Baxter Learning Center, 301 28th Lane in Pueblo beginning at 6:00 p.m.

We need one tennis court in the valley that is usable. I would be willing to give a free group lesson per week.
