Adjust story text size:
In the late 1870’s George Sears leases land from Dona Estefana Hicklin and by 1881 George and Estefana have become friends. They visit each other and George loans Estefana $1,200. “The friendship ended in 1884 when Estefana sued Sears over a business deal. Her claim was that she sold Sears some land in 1882 for $3,000, but was only paid $925. Five years later, in 1889, the court determined the Estefana’s limited knowledge of English rendered the sale invalid. Sears appealed to the court in 1893 for the $1,200 Estefana owed him, but she was released from debt under the statute of limitations law.”
