Strong confidence in Godís sovereign care doesnít mean that as Christians we will not face persecution, trials, and attack.

In I Petr 5:8-9 we are cautioned to be alert.

8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. I Peter 5:8-9

Outside evil forces are always seeking someone to devour. In fact, the verse says the entire family of believers endure similar trials.

Satan has an entire arsenal of weapons to attack and destroy: Sometimes he sows discord between men and God. Sometimes he sows discord between Christian and Christian. He even has the audacity to approach God and try and sow discord between He and men. He may use temptation, persecution, and discouragement.

Peter tells us when we are alert and quickly aware of his attempt to devour us, we need resist by remaining firm in the faith. Obey Godís word, regardless of how that feels at the time and situation.

Our enemy is not other believers. Our enemy is not unbelievers. Our enemy is not people, places, or things. Our enemy is Satan- the great deceiver.

In Ephesians 6:12 Paul echoes the words of Peter.

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 6:12 New International Version (NIV)

The next time you feel like you are being devoured, recognize where it is coming from, resist, and stand firm in the Word of God.

Satan stands no chance against the Word of God.
