Class 2A Rye High School took honors as the top point earner in the Region 3 Knowledge Bowl, with 113 points. They were followed by Class 4A Pueblo County High School with 81 points, East High School with 77 points, and Class 3A Lamar High School with 69 points. These four schools will advance to the state-level bowl. Other competitors were: Primero, La Junta, Trinidad, Pueblo Central, Pueblo West, and Pueblo South high schools.
Cole McGee, Rye High School teacher and team coach said, “I think Rye is a really special place to work. There’s a lot of dedicated staff there and the administration in District 70 is open to a lot of interesting ideas that allow us to teach kids on a pretty high level: in traditional ways and sometimes not traditional ways.”
Sponsored by Rotary 43, directed by Central High School math educator Perry Gridley, and hosted by Pueblo Community College, the 2019 knowledge bowl had ten four member teams. Knowledge Bowl’s have been being held in Southern Colorado since 1970. Contestants cover a wide variety of topics; anything from professional athletics to advanced mathematics, World History, types of animals or infectious diseases may be presented to them, all with only 15 seconds to answer. Jonathan Quenzer, a volunteer reader of the questions for the Knowledge Bowl, said, “These kids are amazing: the knowledge they have and their ability to answer these questions. I’ve been doing this eight years and every year I’m astounded.”
