During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Washington decided to rid the nation of communists either by thoughts or deeds communists were the enemy and a danger to our way of life. Whether or not that was true, it was an era of the "red scare" a majority of the public believed there was a commie "under the bed." Anyway, those who know history remember the days of the House Unamerican Activities Committee (HUAC) that was formed and chartered to root out the menace. They set their sights on the Hollywood community movies where the primary source of visual entertainment and, it followed, a viable vehicle to promote subversive propaganda. With the use of the FBI and some Hollywood informants, lists of producers, directors, and actors were formulated as possible communists. Then through intimidation, the suspects were called before Congress to answer for their supposed transgressions. Once identified as a "red", the suspect was coerced into naming names of other known communists.
